The "H" in "normal"??? I have an early '87, does your dash temp gauge have a Hot position?

Check/change your block ground cable.
Sounds to me like there's more than one fault in your charging system.

Thumbs up Running Hot

My 84 had a problem with gauges reading higher than normal. Sometimes they would read ok, the next time I would be overheating by the gauge and full of fuel. I knew these were not correct readings. I checked all grounds and it turned out to be the dash voltage regulator. This might be the problem.

This is exactly one of the reasons why I suggested long ago to not rely on what
factory gauges are telling you....
