The mud isn't as much the problem as the water running out of the ground... we had 36" of rain through the spring and summer months... and we didn't get nearly as much as some. The compaction is a problem with it being wet too. The moisture is just about right now, but had they started picking early in September like usual, the moisture was way high. These cooler nights have helped dry it pretty good lately. The field here was about 16%, still need dried some, but earlier in the month was closer to 20%, and with the price of the fuel to dry the corn, nobody was in a hurry to pick it too early and pay the drying bill.
