The 8.8 for the trucks is barely different than a 8.8 mustang axle. The axle shafts are of uneven length and it's a 31 spline instead of 28. Other then that, the axle is the same so I don't see why it wouldn't work. Ford racing's website said for all 8.8 axles, maybe the guy on the other end of the phone messed up? 4wheelparts.com has a full floater conversion kit, part number WAR 60433.
