I normally prime it with some of the diesel from the old filter and then top it off with trans fluid.
NEVER TOP UP THE NEW FILTER WITH OLD DIESEL....... ALWAYS USE FRESH OR AS I DO FILL IT WITH A FUEL ADDITIVE... POWER SERVICE, HAYES DIESEL TREAT, STANADYNE ETC..
