1982 Ford 300 6 Carb 'Cleaning'

I've got a 1982 Ford straight 6 300 that you folks have been helping me out with from time to time.

The carb that came with it had a bunch of hoses unhooked, no choke stove, and the throttle linkage was broken.

My distributer has a vaccuum advance.

I switched out the original messed up carb with a decent carb from a 1985, leaving most of the hoses unhooked.

I'd like to use the 1985 carb but take off the throttle position sensor and unhook the remainder of the vaccuum lines (it ran great for the first 1000 miles with the 1985 carb but now its idling rough and I need the truck this weekend to pull some trees around).

Can I 'get by' permanently with the '85 carb unhooked, or do I need to acquire an early 70's carb?

Thanks for the help, Arne
