A 99 or newer axle is the best route. I bought disks from a 99 and found it will be some custom work to install. The disk rear also has larger wheel bearings which gave it greater load. The bearing had to be smaller to to accomodate the drum brakes. I would sell my set for $50 bucks if you are still interested. In the Kansas City area.

I bought the disk from a guy who put a 98 drum in a 99 disk to replace a bad rear. So I am confident the 99 will go in a 98. 97 I would think as well. You do want the cables, they are different on the axle end. Same on the truck end.
