you keep saying 4 wheel low... don't you have to be in neutral to go into 4 low?

My truck you can go into 4 high in park, drive or whenever you want (on the fly) but you have to shift into neutral to go into 4 low.

does it make noise going into 4 high? or possibly the noise is because you are not in neutral.
