Exhaust: Why do they do it like that?

Well, I've seen this on so many other vehicles that I shouldn't be surprised to see it on my new EL.

Exhaust description:

Ford is using a very large cat on each bank which seems better than the old set up of 4 cats. Each cat discharges into a 2-1/2" OD tube, these 2 tubes merge together on the right side near the end of the tranny oil pan. The outlet of the merge is 2-3/4" back to the first joint (flex). Then the "cat back" portion of the exhaust necks down to 2-1/2" into the muffler, out of the muffler at 2-1/2" then bumps back up to 2-3/4".

I think a good exhaust will wake this engine up nicely. I think a system like Magnaflow will work well but may be a bit too loud for a family vehicle. So I may try running either a separate dump tube with a control valve or I may just use the new Aero Exhaust 3030XL with an AR30 for a little more sound deadening.
