Smile 1988 f150 rear main seal oil leak?

Hi,
I have an 1988 f150 4x4 w/ 300 6 cyl. with a nasty oil leak. I took the truck to a local shop and was told it was the oil pan gasket. $350 later I still have the same leak!
I pulled the tranny, clutch and flywheel out and am wanting to fix this myself, however I want to mke sure I fixed it before I put it all back together. A friend of mine told me that if the rear main is leaking, the engine side of the flywheel will be coated with oil, it had some grease and oil on it, but I wouldn't say a lot? The plate between bell housing and engine is covered with oil on both sides.
The truck leaks when engine is running and really comes out when I go up a steep hill.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks Steve
