My guess is that your "generator outlet" is two hots and a neutral....no ground.
your generator probably has two "hots" , a neutral and a ground. to hook it up, you would simply bypass the ground.

Generators are usually meant to be grounded separately. I have a ground rod next to where I place my generator and I use a booster cable to connect it to the frame of the machine when i'm using it.
