Hi Twin,

It seems that most laws are municiple by-laws and each town/city is different but the Canadian law states
"Recommended Practice J986, Sound Level for Passenger Cars and Light Trucks (August 1994), or SAE Standard J1470, Measurement of Noise Emitted by Accelerating Highway Vehicles (March 1992), the exterior sound level does not exceed 80 dBA when a value of 2 dBA is subtracted from the highest average sound level recorded during the test, in the case of a light-duty vehicle."

I ran straight pipes on my 67 Baracuda for years and never received a ticket for that, lots of tickets but none for vehicle noise. I don't believe there are any laws requiring a vehicle to have mufflers it is just the noise level.

I would rather hear the roar of an engine then the thump thump thump from a stereo with to much base.
