The 4.6 modulor engine came out in 1992 in the Ford Crown Vic, Mercury Grand Marquis, and Lincoln Town car. At least that's what the valve covers in my namesake say. :-)

I don't think the Triton name was actually used, at least for marketing, until the 5.4 came out in the '97 series F150. I don't think they usually refer to the 4.6 today as a Triton in the cars, although it's pretty much the same engine as in the F150's. But the 4.6, 5.4, and V10 are all modulor engines based off the "Triton" series.

So you could argue without too much of a stretch that the Triton actually started in 1992. It just wasn't called that yet. Ford had to keep up with the "Vortec" and "Hemi" names in marketing.
