His truck might not have the neutral safety switch. My 82 F100 doesn't have it. Its got the 300 too. Im thinking fuel pump working some of the time and not others, I've had this same prob with my 82 before and it was the fuel pump. Try a small amount of starting fluid down the carb and then try starting it, see if it fires. Or take the fuel line off at the carb and have someone crank the engine, see if your getting fuel out of the line. Fred
