The belt is really easy to change. It takes about 5 minutes if you've never done it before. It is auto-tensioned. An old or worn belt can cause the noise you describe.

on a side note...you can pour the old oil/antifreeze on a Joshua tree and tell it that it's from me *LOL*....hated them darn things.
