Pardon me; but actually Ford built, in factory, a jeep using spicer axles, a 9N tractor engine, and model A transmission for military testing. Certainly not a conversion. Later, still between 1942-45 they built, in factory, a 1.5 ton low profile four wheel drive cargo truck. Again, not a conversion. So this question proves to have more than one answer. But, yes, in 1959 Ford built its first in house 4x4 for the civilian market.
