5 bolt 289 or 6? You said in the OP that it looked like the bolt patterns were the same. Which bolt pattern? Transmission to bell?
IF you have the same (old square pattern) pattern for trans to bell, then you just need to check the input length and throwout bearing issues per the other prior post. That the motor mount issue.
SBF uses longer inputs compared to FE for example, but that does not mean it matches the older 3 gear box you have.
There is a later all synchro 3 speed that will bolt to a 289, not sure if the column shifter linkage would work.
