Clean both surfaces with alcohol (don't waste your drink). Then use the two-sided 3M gray tape (trim tape) with the red plastic backer. Press fairly hard to set. It'll never come off again.
When I got my truck, that strip was missing, so I just cut a piece of aluminum and used that tape. I can't get it back off now, and I want to.
