To achieve the long travel suspension, they had to use longer arms. GThe longer arms make the truck wider, so they had to bulge the fenders to cover the wider suspension and tires. That width is what makes the desert performance possible. Most any desert runner truck will be considerably wider than stock for the same reasons.
