Yes, you're correct. The output shaft would have to be swapped to change between a 4x2 and a 4X4. That takes a complete teardown of the transmission.

If both trucks are 4x4 or both trucks are 4x2 it will be a direct fit, it will bolt in with no modifications. If one is a 4x4 and one is not, then no, it isn't going to work. Find another.

I think that you'll find that you are not going to be able to carry very much without exceeding the axle ratings on a truck of that era. The newer trucks have much higher axle ratings.
