There were originally spark plug wire separators. They were on top of the valve cover where the little tab is and on the stud on the valve cover bolts. You can get them in the Help section at most...

It does have power at the coil with the key on. I checked the resistance on it also.

I thought that the top wire on the ignition module was the signal from the distributor.

The cluster shouldn't have to be removed, but the bezel does. Its held in by 2 screws under the lower trim and tabs at the top. You also need to remove the headlight knob.

The 4R70W is a good transmission. Just don't treat it as an HD unit, and service it properly. Also drain the torque converter. You'll need around 13 quarts. The comment about gears is true.
