I had a similar problem except my batteries ran...

I had a similar problem except my batteries ran down after a big rain. It was a leaky windshield. Charged the bats, replaced the windshield, waited for everything to dry out. Ran great.

The AIH is rarely needed and really just to reduce smoking in cold weather. Disconnect it and make sure the glow plugs are connected and have a low resistance to ground. You may need to check each...

I did know a guy with a Subaru diesel that had never changed his oil with over 200k. The dip stick looked like 90w oil! I was so amazed...I just couldn't imagine doing that to an engine!

In my younger days, I routinely did 1000 mile...

In my younger days, I routinely did 1000 mile days and once 2600 miles pretty much non-stop as in no sleep break...but, I really don't recommend that as ya' get pretty darned tired after 48 hours.

I got the clamp closed by wedging some small wood...

I got the clamp closed by wedging some small wood pieces between the firewall and the sprung up female part of the clamp. Slipped right in and tightened right up.
