Actually, valve and head gasket leaks should stand out like a sore thumb on compression tests...

Was the really clean sparkplug recently changed?

Hard to tell much from plugs of an engine that has only idled... only idling and very short drives before the choke opens fully can make for some dirty looking plugs...

Yeah, I only recommend 600's for stock 350's and smaller... any 350 or larger performance build I recommend a 650 or larger... the idle circuits, etc. seem to be more compatible... Glad you like the...

I'd expect surging to be vacuum working on ignition vacuum advance and/or ignition box changing the timing because of idling on the verge of timing advance RPMs...

In one of the magazine buildups...

The PCV valve holds a vacuum in the crankcase/intake manifold... it opens at WOT to allow excess blowby to go to the air cleaner as well...

You have to do proper diagnostics... even if dreading the results... I was thinking more like a leaking intake valve allowing combustion fire back up into the intake manifold when above idle...

Maybe the head ports and/or cam are running out of breath... or even the aircleaner... many run that size cam in 302" engine's... carb. should be 650-750 CFM... also need headers and true dual 3"...

I'd suggest rebuilding with KB hypereutectic pistons since they usually restore the stock compression height... most rebuilder pistons sit down further in the bore... which is like an even deeper...

Yes, contrary to most BS, most 1960's cars did get pretty good gas mileage... compared to the absolutely horrible MPG of early 1970's cars with actual compression ratios closer to 7's:1 and retarded...

I would avoid the Thumpr and EX cams for a truck... Thumprs a little big and EX too radical of cam lobe design for long cam/valvetrain life... 400" engine should have a full 4" stroke/4" of piston...
