Looks like they went back to 5.5 width or used both as I found this brochure from '83 and they list the stock wheel as a 15 x 5.5 width.

All the tailgates from 78 up will interchange. The difference is in the glass and the latch/striker. But the changes ( changing the glass, latch etc ) can be made so you could bolt any one of them on...
