Yup, you can have codes with no check engine light. A failed glow plug does normally turn on the cel though.

The Lysle tool in the picture above doesn't bottom out against the fitting on the radiator when it fully inserted. If you force it too far it will just chew up the leading edge. Snag some scrap wood...

You can borrow/rent a coolant system pressure testing kit from you local parts store. For me at O'Rileys they call it a loaner but you basically buy it and bring it back the next day for 100% refund....
