Mike, I don't think a clogged CAT is CAUSING the smoke. I think you have a motor problem ( worn rings / etc... as you said)... that might be clogging the CAT AND causing the smoke. The CAT is not...

The newer trucks disengage the 4 x 4 at the wheel ends. I believe there is some difference in the hub/ bearing unit at this area. I don't know if one would happen to fit onto the old spindle or not....

I bought Gabrial Ultras all the way around.. They are larger diameter than stock. Do great on the county highways I drive on. Sometimes off road / dirt roads, but not too often... still do fine.
