I've had good luck with 0000 steel wool and chrome polish as a lubricant to prevent scratching. It looks like stainless. If it's chrome, you could go crazy and use aluminum foil and Coke.

I heard the same explanation about laws prohibiting exiting on the street side. Odd that the Custom Cabs had locks then.

Degrease it and then let soak overnight in Evaporust and it will look sparkling new. You will probably need to hone out the bore and then replace the seals afterwards.
