From my understanding, for original function, the motor needs to be reversible. My plan is to use the original motor on 12v with the dropping resistor.

If it is too difficult to remove the shifter, you can do like you mentioned and remove the cover with the shifter attached.

He can do stainless, or steel.
He can make almost any bend you want.
