One other little thing to try is the radiator cap. Those lever top type can be sketchy... sometimes do not hold pressure May be worth trying a known good standard one.

Agree is sounds like a bad starter solenoid. One way to check is to pull the main wire off the starter itself and isolate it. Then try again... if the noise goes away that is a hint.
