Have tried unplugging the IAC (if there one) while it is whistling?


Does the air intake snorkel vibrate when whistling?

The Expy is not ESOF. It is A4WD (Automatic 4 Wheel Drive). So no Pump or IWEs.
(I'm pretty sure that the 2001 didn't have a 2WD selection on the dial, so no vacuum actuator on the front diff.)

Bank #1 is the portion that includes cylinder #1.
So bank #2 is the portion that doesn't include cylinder #1.
Therefor the upstream sensor nearer the firewall is HO2 sensor 21.

The PCM determines when to open the EGR valve, depending on engine RPM, load, gear, etc,etc. The PCM opens the EGR by energizing the EVR (Egr Vacuum Regulator) and passing vacuum to the EGR valve....

I think what your son (or the shop is trying to say) is NOT that the sensors are not coming on, but that the CAT Monitor and the EVAP Monitor...

I'd go with alloro's suggestion. Have someone hold a rag against the tailpipe just enough to increase the backpressure to see if that exaggerates the sound.
