I don't think he has an inspection cover, it is the "block plate" (as referred to here) that goes between the engine and bell housing and covers the full length top to bottom.

Are you sure you're testing the right wires? The dash gauge signal will pulse.... test the two wires going to the motor.

The charging system is separate from the ignition system.
IOW yes, your charging system needs to be regulated no matter the ignition system.

Right, you would use one of those plastic thingers to release a "spring clip" as such, just like the air conditioning uses.

I will try and take a look in the books sometime this weekend....

Those wires are for the computer and have nothing to do with the dash gauge...

For the gauges, there are single wires leading to sensors... one is red/white-stripe and one is white/red-stripe......
