Poor grounding or corrosion in connections would be my suggestion as a starting point. The indicator comes on when the voltage at the alternator is lower than the voltage in the battery.

Run KOEO and/or KOER tests. Fault Codes should help in indicating the problem. Any time the engine stalls without being shut down with the key, the computer flashes any faults to memory.

Amperage changes are no problem. Voltage changes are a BIG problem. Overdriving circuits designed to run at 12 VDC will eventually damage wiring and exponentially shorten lamp life.
