I have heard between 82-83 the engines were phased out for grey and black depending on what plant it was made at some were still blue.

I always wondered why some core supports were unpainted and otheres were painted black...was this merely just Fords part or different years or is there some signifant mechanical/structural...

You never know though. I saw a 1986 F250 XLT 351 with a beat up (paint scuffed) paint with something like 50k miles sell for over $20,000 last year I think.
