When I first bought my 83 F250 it would cut out exactly as you describe, except not while driving.....only at an idle.
It got progressively worse over a year, until pulling up at an intersection...

FWIW, I had an 87 that had the module fail with pretty similar symptoms to yours.......played up then failed hot, would restart cold (but not hot) for a couple of days, then finally wouldn't start...
