No joke... If it's original it's neither a 360 or a 390. It will be a 351 or 400.

Watch e-bay for awhile and you'll get an idea of how much folks are willing to spend on a clean 79...

The C6 was used in trucks starting in 67, but the 460 wasn't available until 74. 400 shares the same bell housing as the 460 but is different from the FE. So, I'm guessing you have a C6 from a car....

Do a little research on the process if you haven't already. The compressed air method works, but still scares me. I use a soft nylon rope and just stuff it in the cylinder through the spark plug...

Hard to say. I have found valve guide seals in little bits floating around on top of the head (which can then plug oil channels). So anything is possible.

I have some bleed over as well. I assumed it was due to the LEDs I put in it, but also used a new housing from a reputable (DC) dealer. I'll be interested in what you learn.

Usually the pre/post serial number is important for 77's because of the changes mid year. Don't know about a 78.

With that key, it looks like you could just stuff a nickle in the ignition...

They just bolt to the floor. Take boxed end wrenches as well as your sockets. Clearance is pretty tight on some of them.

I not sure about a super cheap cover, but here are a couple of options.
