Along with the other comments i would be pretty concerned on what it's doing to the steering shaft . That movement up and down would be hard on the connecting U-joint i believe . I'm in the north...

I have had a few in the past and had good luck...

I have had a few in the past and had good luck with them. You can make a few mods which i never did and they help more i understand. I wish i had one in place of my 302 but it's got an AOD...

I'v had worn out starters do that after the engine gets warmed up and picks up heat from the exhaust pipes . Good start cold but bad start hot. The "chug " you put in there ,not sure of what you mean.

Why don't you just hook up the choke ? Black wire ground and the other to 12 volt.
It only works if it's needed if you set it up right.:)
