I normally just give each cylinder a couple of squirts right before I install the gauge and just crank it over a few times for the reading, to be sure the oil gets dispersed evenly.

I believe you need to give each cylinder a little squirt of oil for the rings to seal properly. Otherwise you might get a false negative.

The repair was performed today. Truck runs just as good as it did before, and the final bill was some $100 cheaper than originally quoted. AND I have the weekend to spend coaching...
