Yes, you can run the engine briefly w/o the valve cover, but it will make a mess. Some have taken a spare valve cover and cut an opening above the rockers. Temporarily replace the regular valve cover...

I was gone, yesterday, so could not report that I took Gary's suggestion and opened the idle mix screw 1/4 turn. I "think" it has helped, but will open it another 1/4 turn.

Or, for ~$15 at the "Help" section of any parts...

Or, for ~$15 at the "Help" section of any parts store, a manual choke conversion kit could be purchased. They work fine and work as a theft deterrent to those who have no clue to "old school" ideas!...

The "crossed wires" has been noted, before. Somehow, aftermarket modules have these switched. It normally works, though [white to red and red to white].
