634 means the MLP sensor could be out of adjustment, or faulty. Try adjusting first. It's on the driver's side of the trans, right behind the shift linkage.

I scored one of those at the local scrap metal place about two years ago. $20 and some elbow grease and it looks great. Haven't gotten around to mounting it yet though.

The theory is correct about keeping it cooler, but these engines are designed to run best at 195ish. Installing a thermostat that's too low of a temp will also not let the computer go into closed...
