A 302 will perform just fine with larger tires as long as you gear it properly. Assuming you have factory 3.55s, don't run anything larger then 33s unless you're planning a regear.

There's no way someone broke a functioning steering box by cranking hard on a steering wheel. Like Brad said, you need to check the rag joint before assuming the gear box is dead.
