I took an adult ed welding class last year. I learned the hard way, (and quite by accident) why you don't strike an arc with your shield up. It took forever for that...

If it's the stock vacuum motor, it should be directly behind the instrument panel. I'm thinking yours might night be stock if it's jammed against the radio.

I see them from time to time on my local craigslist. They go pretty quickly too. There was a beautiful original-style 48 that went up about a week ago for $8500. I just checked and it's gone.
