Wow. Broke the pinion right off. Haven't seen that before. Cheapest bet is to find a used 8.8" axle and swap the whole thing in (or is that not an 8.8"?). Rebuilding that one will be pricey I'm sure....

Bound up outer axle u-joint would could cause that. Last time mine was bound up, I locked the hubs and drove around in circles in a dirt lot to loosen them up until I had a chance to replace.

If the hubs were locked, or t-case in 4x4, the front axle u-joints would be suspect. But, if the hubs are unlocked & you're t-case is in 2H, they are not suspect.

I suspect either a bad rear...
