Forget about turbo damage, consider what the larger particles are doing to your engine. Turbos are cheap compared to engines.

I put a Tymar on mine a couple years ago and never looked back.

Honestly, if the temps have been in the 80s I doubt the glow plugs are the main problem. My truck had been doing the same thing and I finally changed the injector o-rings and the problem was solved....
