1974 model? They could have still been using backstock of 1972 and older beds for the 8' flaresides. Ford did something similar for the 1961-1962 models...

Check the choke stove and electric assist for proper operation.

It sounds like it is opening too slowly to me as well.

1980-1984 uses one type of tank

1985-1986 uses another.

The differences are in the size of the hole for the sending unit. The 1985-1986 are larger diameter.
