Your trans problem will probably go away when you fix the engine issues.

To remove the trans it is usually easier to remove the transfer case first. Then remove the trans. The trans case and bellhousing are one piece, you cannot separate them.

There are no valves that will stick open. It is possible that the problem is loose feed bolts. More likely is a mechanical failure inside the trans.
