I'm working with a 1991 F-150 SC , short bed, fleet side, 302-5.0 liter

I did some modifications here in the last year .
Like got rid of that weak AOD for a SB C6. (drive shaft needs 3"...

Raising the rpm at idle is not going to create the vacuum it needs like being under load at cruzing speeds. The EGR only works at highway speeds/load.

Could be an Idle air control (IAC) holding the accelerator.
Possibly a bad or out of adjustment Throttle position indicator (TPI)
Maybe even a vacuum leak

Pull the PCV hose on the plugs side...........and...

Pull the PCV hose on the plugs side...........and put a bolt in it ........The idle should drop and smooth rite out. All to often the cheap versions of PCV valves can cause a "hidden internal" vacuum...

Vacuum Line Leak Checking

I like the unlit propane better then the starting fluid. The starting fluid dries the lines and rubber out.
Just crack the bottle open enough for a constant light release of gas. and run the tip...

Hummmm.......I didn't know the 92-96 speedO's worked off the ring gear.

The 91's have a normal cable to the tailshaft of the transmission.

I can see the problem with the Rabs lights coming...

Well it seem when you go for dependable power you often can't look for gas mileage with it.

I would stay with the lower gears, and consider the lubrication mods if any. they are relitivly simple...
