I know its an ancient post, but I have often installed a remote filter (usually a FL1A, or the two-quart truck version) in the return line. I don't change the internal filter either.

any parts store will have the conversion kit about $45. it works good, and will get you on the way quickly.
if you really want to go overboard, you could replace the orifice tube ($2) receiver...

It wasn't the clock spring ($50), it isn't the steering wheel, unplugged the speed control unit, that wasn't it. circuit 18 is a 10 amp fuse, manual says it controls air bag restraint (along with #5)...
