Might want to get an oversize plug for the one that was loose. And I use aircraft sealant, not RTV. It comes on the little bottle with the brush in the cap.

Hydraulic lifters? Could have floated a valve and had some inadvertent contact. I've been meaning to get one of those bore scopes from HF when they go on sale so I can peek in the spark plug hole....

The VC31 is pretty much it. I think you may be over thinking this one. The springs and weights set the advance curve. The vacuum advance pot is identical across the varieties.
