Vacuum pump under the driver's side headlight maybe? Others with 2011/2012 reported the same sound and it was a vacuum pump related to brake boost and the device is under the driver side headlight...

Well, with some deeper searching I found that the turbos are cooled via convection using the coolant after the engine is turned off. So that takes care of that question ;-)

Would an alternate procedure be simply turning on...

Would an alternate procedure be simply turning on the headlights once the battery cables are disconnected? Wouldn't that drain any leftover voltage remaining in the PCM, etc and accomplish the same...
