The sensors are actually part of the latch. When mine act up I spray the door latches down with WD 40 making sure to use the straw to get inside the latch too. This usually does the trick.

Had the same problem with mine. Changed the cigarette lighter fuse was able to check my codes. Not sure about the 7.3 but my 6.8L had to have the key in the run position too.
