There should be a spring behind the escutcheon. Press down on the escutcheon until you see a pin that is installed in the handle. Drive that pin out with a drift.

I agree with 38coupe. Get a better truck and use any parts you can from your Grandpa's truck. That way it is doable and you have honoured your Grandpa's memory. Good luck!

Claude's Buggies was an aftermarket supplier to the VW off-road hobby. That would explain the 6volts. Looks like a good find.
